Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
